A Growth Hacker is a person whose true north is Growth.
According to Andrew Chen, an influential technologist and entrepreneur: Growth Hacker is integrating itself into Silicon Valley's culture. Growth Hackers are a hybrid of of marketer and coder, one who looks at the traditional question of: How do I get customers for my product? And answer with A/B test, landing pages, viral factor, email deliverability and open graph.
Dropbox, Instagram, Pinterest are examples of startup companies that made use of growth hacking and became top world companies and worth billions of dollars. Growth Hacking has helped companies like Facebook, Instagram, Evernote, Dropbox, Mailbox, Pinterest, Twitter, StumbleUpon.
Aaron Ginn said "the end growth of every growth hacker is to build a self-perpetuating marketing machine that reaches millions by itself". The old system traditional marketing is of no use if you want to get your company to the top. Growth hackers job isn't to do marketing but to grow companies really fast.
According to Ryan Holiday the best selling author of trust me, I'm Lying: He said a growth hacker is someone that has thrown out the playbook of traditional marketing and replace it with only what is testable, trackable and scalable. Their tools are emails, pay-per-click-ads and platform APIs, instead of commercials, publicity and make money. Growth hackers relentlessly pursue users and growth and when it is done right those users beget more users who beget more users.
Marketing is about knowing your customers.
Make stuff people want- Paul Graham. In marketing there is a term call Product Market Fit (PMF),that is product and it's customers are in perfect sync with each other.
Engineering and Marketing would bring about Success which is Growth Hacking and it involves the acquisition of customers, activation of customers, retention of customers, the referral system which yields revenue. It involves the usage of analytics ( Google analytics, KISSmetrics, Intercom, Mixpanel....).
